Curve Alert: Facebook Hashtags

Facebook has (finally) decided to integrate hashtags.

*To stay keep you ahead of the curve, I'll issue these "curve alerts" when I see a breaking development in the new media world. If you don't know what I'm talking about, please feel free to ask!

Let's be friends

I know you have lots of questions and not a lot of answers. I also know there is a lot of confusing, complicated information on Google and the rest of the web. I also know you might be thinking of purchasing a Social Media for Dummies book right now.

Stop! You're not a dummy.

If you're like most business owners or brand representatives who haven't yet ventured into the new media world (or have only put your toe in the water) you just might be thinking:
  • "What's all of this new media? Should I be using it?" (The answer is probably yes.)
  • "Can I use it to fit my/my business's needs?" (Yes.)
  • "Is it free advertising?" (Yes, but be careful with this assumption.)
  • "How much time does it take? Do I have the time?" (Yes.)
  • "Should I hire someone to explore this stuff for me?"(Not necessarily, but it's an option)
  • "Do I have the kind of business/services/products/things people want to see on these sites?" (Yes.)
  • "Which new/social media sites are right for my business?" (Let's figure it out together.)

My hope is that you'll see this blog as a companion. Something/someone to help you wade out into the online media pool and attack this new "media blitz" with confidence. There will be a lot of trial and error. There will be things you might like more than others (That's OK!). Let's get together. Let's collaborate. Let's challenge each other. Let's find solutions. Let's see what works... and what might be worth tossing.

Let's be friends. Not "friends." Real friends.

Facebook burst onto the scene with massive and exponential growth less than 10 years ago. Twitter shortly thereafter. Tons of start ups came next. Some have prospered, some were bought out by the giants and others have sputtered. Social media is new to everyone. And it's ever-evolving. Many people claim to be social media experts. But there's no such thing. Once you think you've mastered one site or element, the makers tweak something and the learning process begins again. Together, we can stay ahead of the learning curve.

I grew up in the age of computers and evolving digital media. In my education and my job, I've seen how media has impacted several vastly different industries. I'm immersed in the new media world in my life and career, and I (like you) am learning new things every day. Above all, I consider myself a student.

Pick my brain. If you have questions about the certain types of digital media, online media, mobile media or social media I touch on (or even those that I don't), please don't hesitate to email or leave a comment!

Best,
Jordan Johnson
